Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many are from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.

My students are active and enthusiastic.

They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

Our school is in a high needs and high poverty area in which most children qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities, and are always striving to be and do, better for themselves and for others.

My Project

Coming back full time into the classroom for many of my middle school students has not been an easy transition. I want my students to have access to learning beyond their computer screens and beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Starting up a Garden Club at I.S.

254 will be a wonderful opportunity to engage students with hands-on learning. Learning that has a direct impact on their lives.

Students often talk about how in their home country they had a garden and how it was fun watching plants grow. Transforming our school's yard space will allow students to take on leadership roles and bring their prior knowledge to the forefront.

A garden space will allow for students to engage with one another in a way that does not take place in the classroom. This garden space will allow students from all grades to learn from one another, work together to see something come to life, and have more awareness for their environment.
