Cultivating Knowledge Through Vertical Gardens

Help me give my students two tower garden growing systems. This will take my students beyond the textbooks and provide real-world experience of growing their food and flowers.

My Project

The vertical gardens will allow hands on opportunities for students of all ages. Students engage directly with the process of planting, nurturing, and harvesting crops and flowers, providing a tangible learning experience that complements traditional classroom instruction. This project will be used within our science curriculum, as well various cross curriculum opportunities, by growing plants in a controlled environment. This allows students to observe and understand fundamental scientific concepts such as photosynthesis, plant life cycles, soil composition, and environmental factors influencing plant growth. They learn about healthy eating habits and the importance of incorporating fresh produce into their diets, promoting lifelong wellness.

South Dakota has a strong agricultural heritage, and gardening in the classroom provides students with a direct connection to the state's farming traditions.

Cultivating plants fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and the role of plants in sustaining ecosystems. Living in South Dakota, where the climate can be challenging for gardening, students gain an understanding of planting and harvesting throughout the year instead of a very small fraction of the growing season.

Overall, integrating a garden tower project into the classroom curriculum not only enriches students' academic learning but also nurtures their personal growth, environmental stewardship, and connection to their community.
