My Project

My students are resilient, hard-working scholars that strive for success. The students I teach are working towards English proficiency at differing levels. Some of my students speak and comprehend very little English, while others are closed to becoming proficient. The majority of my students have a native/home language of Spanish and can fluently speak, comprehend, read, and write in Spanish. Many of my students are still learning basic foundational skills of reading and writing in English, as well as speaking and comprehending English.

My students deserve to have readily available, high interest, engaging books that are relatable and relevant to their everyday lives.

When students are learning a second language, English, it is very difficult for them to keep up with grade level skills when they are unable to read texts in their new language. By giving students access to books they can read in their first language, the native language is cultivated. Research has shown that students who are strong in reading, comprehending, and writing in their native languages are able to easily transfer those skills over to English when they become proficient.

The book titles chosen are popular books with today's middle school students. These books are high interest, helping students develop a love for reading. Some of the books are bilingual, allowing students to see the English print as well as the Spanish print, exposing students to both languages at once. The light shades will help cut out the harsh lighting in the classroom, and the projector light will set a peaceful ambience to read by.
