My students need Chromebooks for research activities, interactive tutorials, and coding and a secure storage charging cabinet.
As a middle school science teacher at a Title I middle school, I believe that my students deserve to experience learning science in innovative, creative ways. Many of my scholars have been affected by Harvey and engaging activities will help to inspire and motivate them.
Most of my students are classified as economically disadvantaged, yet they are eager to know what exciting activities they will experience in science class each day.
Although I do not have control over circumstances they may be experiencing outside of school, I know that I can make a difference by providing them with engaging, innovative, and real-world application and activities in my classroom each day.
My students come to my class with different science experiences and backgrounds, and many are faced with barriers such as learning disabilities, language barriers, or lack of experiences and exposure to engaging science investigations and the use of technology.
Regardless of these barriers, I am challenged with the responsibility of making sure each individual student receives the best learning experience so that they can be prepared for their next level of learning and their future career.
As an advocate for student-centered education, I know that scholars will end up doing work that hasn’t been invented yet and I want to ensure that they are prepared to meet the challenge. I must do what I can to break down the many barriers scholars face inside and outside of school.
It is my mission to ensure that they leave my classroom with as much exposure and experience with twenty-first century learning skills as possible.
With your help, these Chromebooks will be used to not only create a collaborative learning environment and to increase literacy through coding, but the devices will be also be used for delivering information, creating, exploring, and experimenting as we learn different concepts in science. For example, each scholars will be able to get individualized learning that meets their needs through interactive tutorials and simulations. They will also be able to learn how to code and program robots during our extracurricular class period.
With this project, I hope to inspire my scholars to explore STEM related career fields. This might be there only opportunity to get this type of experience and I want to make sure that all of my scholars have a chance know that they have what it takes to compete with their peers around the world regardless of their socioeconomic status.
