Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

New Jersey, is a sanctuary city where families from all over the world come to seek new beginnings. In our school, students speak many languages and carry stories of transition, hardship, and hope. Despite living in an area with economic challenges, our students are rich in culture, kindness, and a willingness to care for others. To cultivate both food and empathy, we are creating a student-run hydroponics garden in our classroom. This garden will not only grow vegetables but also grow our students’ capacity for compassion.

Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of others by taking on responsibility for growing food that will go to our school’s free produce pantry—supporting peers who may be facing food insecurity.

As they work together to maintain the garden, they will also learn about the global challenges of hunger and resource scarcity, and what it means to meet someone’s basic needs with dignity. This hands-on project teaches students how small acts—watering a plant, harvesting a crop—can contribute to alleviating suffering. They will reflect on what it means to nourish both bodies and spirits through care and cooperation. By managing the entire process themselves, students will feel empowered to take action in their own communities.

We will measure success by tracking garden yields, student participation, and student reflections on what compassion means to them. They will write brief reflection journals about how their work in the garden connects to the lives of others and how it has changed the way they see their peers. By supporting this project, you are helping us sow seeds of empathy, action, and community—one plant and one student at a time.
