Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 21 wonderful, brilliant, empathetic second graders at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They are energetic, funny, and curious, and they're gearing up for a big year of learning!
My students deserve a colorful, comfortable space where they can cultivate a learning community with their classmates.
This project is one of many efforts that our classroom is making to ensure we have quality materials that will ensure our environment is one in which kids love to learn.
My Project
Second graders deserve to have a space where they can learn, have fun, and ask big questions. A classroom rug is a centerpiece of each room. It's the place where students gather for read-alouds, restorative circles, class meetings, and more. For the first time this year, our class will be an ICT room, an integrated co-taught room. That means we need to have two learning areas, and having this classroom rug will ensure we have that. We also need classroom book baggies that will last! Each year we use disposable plastic bags. We go through them too quickly, and they diminish the magic of reading. Finally, we need some quality bins. Each year our class has inherited a hodgepodge of bins that don't match, and color coordinated organization helps learners know exactly where their materials are.
Kids enjoy working in a setting that has been created with their needs in mind.
Having a classroom rug, book baggies that last, and bins for our varied learning areas will help us have the best year ever!
