My students need materials that will help them learn self-control, self-calming strategies, and social skills through guided activities and classroom discussion.
I work in Title I school teaching 5th and 6th graders who have intellectual disabilities. My classroom community of 12 learners are working on building academic, emotional, communication, and social skills. While my students have varied learning strengths and needs, all learn best with hands-on activities that require active participation.
My energetic learners are discovering that they can do difficult things; that their disabilities do not define them.
My students are mastering skills now that will touch their futures.
My Project
My students have difficulty maintaining positive peer relationships and controlling their emotions when they are frustrated or upset. I begin every school day with a morning meeting that is focused on building my students' social skills through guided reading and hands-on activities. Our morning meeting allows students to practice positive social skills and self-calming strategies in safe and encouraging setting. Our morning meeting time has become a welcome and necessary part of our day because it sets the tone for the day and has given the tools to be better classroom citizens.
I would like to provide my students with additional tools (fidgets, social skills books, sensory items that allow focused, non-disruptive movement in the classroom) that we can use during our morning meeting and throughout the school day as needed to grow students' social skills and responsible classroom citizenship.
I believe the items that I am requesting will further my students on their journey to learning that they are not controlled by their anger or defined by their disabilities. I want to give my students opportunities for deep discussion sparked by quality books targeting social skills, tools that will empower them to find ways to stay in control and refocus, and access to a classroom that is calm and inviting. The fluorescent light filters and jelly fish aquarium will help create a calm environment.
The requested social skills books will be read aloud during morning meeting time and students will be lead in discussion and participate in activities related to the social skills focus in the book. The fidgets and sensory items requested will offered as tools that students can use when they are feeling upset or anxious. Students will be taught to figure out which fidgets and sensory tools work for them as tools to re-focus.
