The word games provide opportunities for my students to actively develop basic reading skills. Reading is very challenging for my students and reading instruction can become a very frustrating experience for my students who know they lack the skills of their non-disabled peers. Reading and word games provide a fun, non-threatening way to teach basic reading skills to students. Immersed in a fun game, students forget they are working on reading skills and get lost in the excitement of the game. Participating in fun games that sneak in reading instruction and word work makes the work of learning to read less intimidating to my students. In addition, my students also get to work on social skills (turn-taking, playing fairly, following the rules of the game), pragmatic language skills (how to talk to others playing the game, making eye contact) while building reading skills.
