My students need cookie containers, hot coffee cups, mason jars, and lemonade and iced tea mix
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from low socioeconomic communities where resources are scarce. They have special needs and do not graduate from my high school to go on to college; rather, they have to find jobs and begin to support themselves while helping out their families. My school is lucky enough to have a kitchen work site, where students learn job skills as part of their regular school day in order to prepare them for the workforce. At our-in school work site, Lillian's Bistro, my students learn different skills, such as chopping vegetables, searing meat, washing dishes, taking orders, making change in a cash register, and even taking inventory or shopping at Costco for food. During their regular daily tasks, my students often use words in their native language and need a diverse setting to foster more proficient use of the English language.
Together, with your support we can make this setting a reality for my students and bridge the gap between their native language and English.
Xiǎochī. Bocadillo. Lanche. Zakuska. Making snacks (which is what these words say) creates an environment that allows an instructor and student to have open discussions and facilitate the acquisition of the English language. Having mason jars for building different salads, cookie platters to sell cookies we made together at school bake sales, and cups and drink mixers, will allow me to provide instruction with real-world terminology for students who are learning of English. Many of the terms that will be used to prepare different foods and beverages will drastically improve the English language vocabulary used by many of my students. These youngsters need certain vocabulary to take with them after high school in order to get jobs in the food service industry. With new materials in a kitchen environment, my students will feel safe to make mistakes, which will promote learning. While having candid conversations over snacks or drinks, my students will learn to transition from using their native language to the language they need to enter the workforce!
