As teenage boys with autism, my students have a lot of energy and need assistance building their dexterity. They also need to learn how to get their energy out in a more productive and healthy way. They often jump in place and want to move around on the floor, but require the proper equipment to make their movements more refined. The equipment I need to help my students includes hand grips to improve fine motor skills, resistance bands and an ab wheel to stimulate the stabilizer muscles, medicine balls and push-up bars to help build overall strength, and a foam roller and foam mats to help them stretch and relinquish any pain before and after exercising. I have instituted a warm-up regimen into our daily classroom routine. We put on music and stand up and stretch, and my students really enjoy this. Moreover, I have noticed that starting the day with a warm-up routine helps the boys sit down and focus on the next lesson. With the additional equipment, I can introduce even more exercise into my classroom for an overall increase in both a transfer of skills in dexterity to more functional daily living activities, as well as an increase in attention and focus for academic purposes. Studies have shown that regular exercise impacts the brain by improving memory and even critical thinking. This project will really help my autistic boys become more physically and mentally fit for learning.
