Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want every one of my students to return to school and feel successful when they finish fourth grade. I want them to have the tools (supplies) they need to do their best on every assignment or project. Our biggest challenge is budget cuts! Our supply budget has been cut to the bone and we will be without basic supplies.
My students are eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge!
They love to do projects and work hard when they are challenged. Our school is in a high poverty area of the city and most of our families struggle every day just to provide the basics. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of these students rely on the school to provide more than just their education. They receive breakfast and lunch at school, clothing, shoes, backpacks, coats, and other necessities. Most students arrive at school with no supplies at all. Our families can't afford to contribute even pencils or tissues to the classroom. It is often difficult for the school to meet all the needs of all the students.
My Project
Big kids need room to sit together too! Our current carpet is way to small for all 30 kids to gather together. We need a larger carpet so everyone can fit comfortably and be productive when we gather together. We need to be able to come together for discussions, mini-lessons, partner activities, read alouds, class meetings, and collaboration in general.
Who can focus on instruction when they are squished up and falling half way off the carpet!
This would allow us a lush space that would be special and conducive to learning. We gather several times a day and waste valuable time just trying to get arranged on our small carpet. This would save valuable teaching time and improve learning across the curriculum.
