My Students

Our students have an incredible opportunity to receive college credit by studying digital imaging. Part of the class includes becoming a better photographer. Our students have to "Make It Work" with only three cameras for 20 students, so limited access is the challenge.

Our students are creative, bright, and motivated teenagers who enjoy expressing themselves.

They are self starters and strive for excellence as they are being educated in a unique school within a large urban school district. Our school concentrates on preparing the students for higher education in the fields of science and medicine. They attend school an extra hour every day and participate in an extended school year to accommodate a rigorous academic schedule. Our students are determined to be successful in all areas with an attainable goal to go to college and we need to give them the equipment they need to succeed.

My Project

Throughout this class, these students learn how to take better pictures. Few have their own cameras and most use cell phones to take their pictures. We have three cameras in a class of 20 students. Having more digital cameras and accessories would allow them to look deeper into the photographic process. My students are incredibly talented and have a high interest in photography and digital imaging. Right now they want to take better photos, make movies or write songs and with enough college level equipment, I can push them further to create higher quality digital projects.

Knowledge is power and the more students know, the better their art and the better their lives.

How can we get our students to think outside the box? What else can the image be other than the literal? How can I change the interpretation of others as they view my artwork or view the world? We can do this by changing their approach to a situation or their presentation of an idea. We can do this by tapping into what they are excited about and that is technology.
