Cross Stitching the Curriculum

My students need 40 copies of the book "Project Mulberry" by Linda Sue Park, 200 live silkworm eggs,10 terramiums with lids, and 1 lb of artificial silk worm dry diet.

I am requesting two class sets of the book "Project Mulberry," written by Linda Sue Park, and the supplies needed to raise silkworms for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade gifted students. Most of the students are avid readers, who are reading and comprehending text several grades beyond their grade level. Therefore, the basal reader does not challenge them. During our reading block, we integrate biographies, realistic fiction, and historical fiction into our diverse curriculum. The book "Project Mulberry" is ideal for this purpose. I have created a nine week unit, for the last quarter of the school year, which integrates reading, science, social studies, and language arts through hands-on activities related to the book "Project Mulberry." In this integrated unit, students will explore the scientific method, the life cycle of a silk worm, the history of the Silk Road, Korea, tolerance, friendship, and the art of embroidery, When the curriculum is integrated, students find excitement in learning and discover the relationship of the different subjects to real world events Working on a science project can be one of the most exciting, yet challenging, adventures a student will have in school. It is a unique way for students to satisfy their curiosity about the world around them while applying many reading, math, writing, and thinking skills they have learned. The highlight of this unit will be a group science project that involves raising silkworms -- just like the characters in the book. I feel that this unit is a a sound educational experience that will satisfy the diverse needs of the students, but it can not be accomplished without your generosity. Please help me to cross stitch reading, science, social studies, and language arts into the minds of these clever students as they eagerly discover the world beyond their environment.
