This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm a psychology and history teacher at a well known high school in Paterson, New Jersey. Many of my students deal with some difficult issues living in the city such as crime, gang violence, unemployment and drugs just to name a few. After Covid 19, my students had an even more difficult time. Not only did many get sick themselves, they also lost family members to the virus as well as our beloved principal Dr. Glisson. I wanted to do what I could to help them find an outlet for stress and anxiety. It's for that reason that I began this after school club.."Crochet It Away".

Crochet has been proven to help relieve stress and anxiety and it provides a calming effect on those who practice it.

I have been amazed at the response I have gotten from not only girls but boys as well. Each day we meet, our club gets larger and larger to the point that I am very low on materials which I have been providing. I don't want to limit my kids to what they can make because of a lack of yarn. Many of them choose to make blankets for siblings rather than themselves! It never fails that when we meet, conversations happen and many times, these teens begin to open up about things that are going on in their lives. They are learning the useful art of Crochet but they are also receiving a proven way to relieve stress and anxiety while being able to share their feelings. What's even better...none of them picks up their phones because their hands and minds are busy!

Please help me give these students the kind of social emotional club that gives them the chance to create something wonderful while in a safe and comfortable place ❤️
