My students are fifth grade students that enjoy coming to school. It is a place for them to come and have their needs taken care of, whether it is physical or emotional. It is a safe place to come and make friends and enjoy learning. Our school is a Title I school that has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-priced lunches. However, our students love coming to school every day. Our staff's number one priority is the students. We make learning fun!
I have high expectations for my students, therefore I teach in a way that allows students to demonstrate their deeper thinking and develop rigor of State Standards by communicating their thinking, participating in class discussions, using academic vocabulary, and transferring skills between subject areas.
My Project
The Osmo game system for the iPad will allow my students to build word recognition and develop mathematical thinking. The focus will be on developing word recognition in order to build communication through writing and speaking. The Osmo will also develop a learning environment that promotes critical mathematical thinking. It will allow students to discover math concepts and how math works in the world around us. The project will create a student led environment in the classroom with the teacher being the facilitator. Small group tasks can help limit math anxiety and promote self-confidence.
The Osmo game system will also be used for coding.
The students will develop a deep understanding of coding and see how it is used everyday in the world around us. The Osmo will implement lessons that allow students to complete high cognitive demand performance tasks as individuals or small groups. It will help students realize learning math and science can be fun!
