My Students

My high-performing students are so oriented on the goal of getting into an excellent college that they are often afraid to take risks because they don't want to experience failure.

My students are typical middle-America kids living in a town surrounded by one of California's largest cities.

They work hard and all have the goal of going to a great college, but some are focused in how to earn points for a grade rather than how to develop the critical thinking skills necessary for success in college.

My Project

Teachers at my school have had great success teaching students to take intellectual risks in math class by using whiteboards. Unlike a student's spiral notebook, there is no permanent record of a student's developing thought process. Students think individually and privately on small whiteboards and then transfer their thoughts to the large whiteboards. They collaboratively figure out the most effective approach and solution to the problem on the large whiteboard before sharing with the class and copying it into their notes. All students engage in the risk-taking because there is no record of any failed approaches or attempts at a solution to a problem.

To prep students for both the Common Core State Standards assessments, for their university careers and for their eventual careers after high school, I need to teach them how to think critically and take intellectual risks.

These whiteboards will help create a classroom environment that encourages such risk-taking.
