My students are highly motivated precalculus honors students living in an urban setting. Few will ever need to navigate without the aid of technology, but all will need to master trigonometry before taking calculus. Trig can be an abstract study and while the students understand they need to know it for calculus, some are unmotivated when they don't see any application of trig. So, when I start trig in March, I begin with an application project designed by my coworker Kathy. The three triangles they create demonstrate three different techniques for solving triangles. My very mature students enjoy measuring and writing angle-side-side problems because the acronym. The students enjoy this unit with its group assessment. I am always impressed with the creativity and professionalism of the projects that are submitted accompanied by beautiful pictures, interesting scenarios and, of course, perfect mathematical solutions with text-book ready justifications.
