Critical Learning Supplies for a Virtual Bilingual Classroom
Help me give my students critical educational supplies, such as base ten blocks, ten frames, glue sticks, scissors, and more, for a successful virtual learning experience at home.
I teach a K-2 bilingual class in an urban school with 85% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are brand new to the United States. My students enter my classroom with little or no English. Many of them have never had a school experience in their native country. It is my job to prepare them for the regular education classroom.
My students are currently from four different countries, speaking three different languages.
My students are all eager and excited to learn.
My Project
My students will be starting the school year from home. All of my students have arrived in this country during the past year. They have limited supplies at home. Since we are going to be learning virtually, I would like to support their learning at home by providing them the necessary supplies for success. I want them to have access to the supplies that they would normally have at school.
Math manipulatives are imperative for bilingual learners at this age to comprehend math concepts concretely before moving to the abstract understanding.
For example when learning how to add two digit numbers, the students will be able to use the base ten blocks to physically add objects to gain an understanding of the concept. Or when leaning to tell time, they will be able to manipulate their miniature clock while I model counting by 5s on my clock, just as we would in the classroom. In addition to math manipulative such as base ten blocks, mini clocks, play money, rulers, etc. My students also need basic supplies for learning such as whiteboards and dry erase pens, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.I would like to be able to give them access to learning that makes sense to them and meets them where they are at. Without in person-learning, I feel that having necessary materials during virtual learning is the next best thing until we return to the classroom. If we do return to the classroom during this school year, these same materials will assist the students with their homework.
