This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hardworking and love to read.

They are a diverse group that knows their efforts will lead them to success. They are curious about the world around them and are interested in current events. They are committed to being civic minded leaders, accomplished writers, and resilient lifelong learners.

My Project

My students will use the Time For Kids nonfiction articles in our daily reading and writing workshop. They will practice critical reading skills such as using evidence to support claims, making inferences, and reading for understanding. They will consider whose perspective the article is written from and whose perspective is not represented. They will think about author's bias and reader's bias. They will also use the articles for mentor text when they write informative and opinion pieces.

A small donation to this project will keep my students reading and writing about current events all school year.

In order for students to be civic minded leaders, it is necessary for them to develop the habit of daily news reading with a critical eye.
