This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school-based occupational therapist working in Miami, FL, I work with many students who require intervention to improve their fine motor, visual motor, and visual perceptual abilities. These students struggle with handwriting abilities, self-care skills, and overall lack of coordination when engaging in age-appropriate tasks.
My therapy room is in need of more supplies in the area of fine motor and handwriting adaptations in order to provide for my students.
My students currently require intervention in the area of visual motor skills, specifically handwriting. They struggle with letter formation, word spacing, letter sizing, and overall motor control. Methods to facilitate improved handwriting abilities include adaptive paper, modified writing utensils, and reward incentives.
My Project
The adaptive papers (raised line, story book paper, highlighted paper, etc.) will provide visual guidance for our students to achieve improved sizing and spacing and overall alignment. The adaptive pencils (triangular, shortened, etc) will provide for improved pencil grasp of writing tool for improved letter formation and motor coordination. The short markers and crayons will also provide for improved grip and control for coloring tasks. The white boards will be used as a vertical surface for our students to achieve improved strengthening and postural alignment. Finally, the stickers will provide for positive reinforcement in therapeutic achievement.
These items are basic essentials for my students to succeed in their learning environment.
I cannot wait to share these items with my students and unleash their handwriting potential.
