Criss Cross Curriculum: Using Art to Inspire Reluctant Teen Readers
My students need colored pencils and markers to create artistic and creative responses to literature, including the graphic novels that are also included in this order.
My classroom serves a wide variety of students. We are a community of diversity, with a large Creek Native American population and a growing Burmese immigrant population. We are also a Title l school, which means many of our students do not have access to books at home, or transportation to a public library. With ESL, SPED and GT students all sharing one classroom, differentiation and student choice is a must.
We face a unique challenge in trying to change the negative or apathetic attitude many of our students and parents have towards literacy and education.
My Project
In my Junior and Senior English classes, I am constantly trying to find ways to reach teens who are convinced they are not readers. The materials requested in this project are aimed at students who enjoy art and working with their hands. In my class, we do silent sustained reading for the first 15 minutes of every day. While the rest of class involves teacher selected texts, the students get to choose what they read during this first 15 minutes. The purpose of this activity is to help students improve ACT scores by increasing reading stamina and vocabulary. Once a week, we do an assignment with the novels we read during silent reading. These assignments include creating alternate book jackets, crafting one pagers (a type of visual book report that analyzes themes and characters while incorporating graphics) and making "Reading Passports" to help students keep track of what they have read during the trimester.
I am requesting colored pencils, markers, graphic novels, and high interest novels aimed at creating a cross curriculum environment that will capture the attention of my more reluctant readers.
By showing students that literature and art are connected, I hope to show them the significance of effective communication. Graphic novels are the perfect marriage of art and words. I want students to see that both of these disciplines are concerned with expressing emotions and ideas. Finally, I have also included a laminator and bulletin board supplies so I can archive and display the students' work and celebrate them for the artists they are. Student art work based on the novels they have read will serve to promote literature and help future students decide what they would enjoy reading during silent reading.
