Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high-need community in New Mexico, and we are working to increase our vocabularies and learn about the world around us!

I teach 23 students, many of whom are learning English as a second language.

Our school is 100% free lunch and breakfast. Our district budget has been decreased by $43 million this year alone, and more budget cuts are pending. We love science, art, and music, so they have become a focus of our curriculum.

My Project

With our love and passion for science, we have been studying many different life cycles and observing closely our class pets which include a tarantula, two gerbils, a rat, a tadpole, a frog, two snails, two corn snakes, a leopard gecko, a rabbit, and four fiddler crabs. Each year we watch closely different life cycles and see animals such as ladybugs and caterpillars go through metamorphosis. With budget cuts, getting materials to supplement the learning process will be impossible. Although I've been collecting and encasing found insects for my students to see, they tend to fall apart quickly, and it is hard for students to count the legs and categorize them. Having different arthropods encased in acrylic to identify and sort into groups such as myriapods, insects, and arachnids, will help us solidify our newly found knowledge. Having fun games to help us identify and sort will help to expand our vocabulary. These games and activities will tie in beautifully with our unit on the rainforest.

Thank you for helping us get buggy in the classroom and delve deeper into learning about the beautiful and mysterious arthropods on our planet!

Your kindness and generosity inspires us to learn and do great things! Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!
