My students are brave, confident, and realistic learners. My students take risks in the classroom and feel safe while doing so. My students also face the adversity every day of not having everything they need for success. Some come from run down apartments, and some don't have clean clothes to wear every day. And at least a handful of my students each year are considered "homeless" as they are bussed in from shelters. All of my students receive free lunch, and most receive food bags from a local church community every Friday. They live in an inner city and attend a district school that has an unfortunate "revolving door" with many transient students in and out. In my classroom, we focus on being a family. We support each other and are all kind to one another.
Despite their adversities, my students are sponges, they come to school ready to soak in knowledge.
They try their best to leave behind their home lives and concentrate on building their vocabulary and math skills. Our school provides a nurturing environment for them to do so. We meet in restorative circles every morning and practice mindfulness breathing exercises to get our day started.
My Project
I was lucky to travel on a professional development grant last summer to attend The Creativity Workshop. I learned many strategies to entice my young writers to use their creative minds in multiple ways.
Providing each student with a sketchbook and set of colored pencils will enable them to utilize their creativity in more ways than one.
Students will be able to write poetry, draw their visions, and use color to enhance their thoughts with the materials we are requesting.
My classroom will be ELA based next school year so I am requesting enough for two classes worth of students.
