My Students

Last year was my first year as a teacher/librarian in my junior high and we were not allowed to let students hang out before school, during lunch, or for clubs.

This critical time that kids needed to connect, unwind, and leave their stresses behind was taken away, but now it’s back!

As we started this new year the number of students wanting to use our space exploded. We have quickly eaten up our budget for games and craft supplies as kids came in to play, create, and just be kids!

Mainly, I want to give them hope and a place to cultivate it!

My Project

School can be stressful! So can home life. Kids need a place to relax, connect with other kids, and find new interests. My library sees over 150 kids a day just during lunchtime.

When you get junior high kids using their hands and their creativity, they open up and talk about what’s happening in their lives.

For each major holiday, we try to pull out the art supplies and let the kids create. For Halloween, we did pony bead key chains and for Christmas we let the kids decorate their own ugly sweaters.

Kids could bring their own sweaters/hoodies or if they didn't have one we took in donations and purchased many for them. Every day another student would ask if they could decorate a sweater. In December, every Friday was ugly sweater day so they had a chance to show off their creations. Some students never get to participate in days like this, but this year they could.

We have art projects planned for Valentine's Day, kindness week, National Library month, and spring. Having these supplies will take a huge load off our budget and allow more students to participate in these art/craft days.

As they work on these projects, our students find new friends with similar interests and add people into their lives that may remain there for years. The more people these kids have on their personal teams, the more successful they will be in life.

Our school has a cell phone policy that says “disconnect to connect.” That’s what these craft supplies will help do.
