Have you been in a junior high lunch room lately? It is noisy, crowded, chaotic, and down right scary. There are many students that would rather go without eating than walk into that situation. In our school, the library has opened its doors during lunch to welcome all students to sit, eat, and maybe make some new friends during that 30 minute period. The problem we are having is that we don't have enough places for kids to sit at a table. Students are eating on the floor or while sitting on a chair. It makes them feel vulnerable and embarrassed if they spill on themselves or the floor. I would love to utilize some space I have near some windows to put tables and stools so students can eat alone or, if they choose, with a friend or two. Either way, they are part of a group. The library kids group. Every student deserves that!
