This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Just recently, after I finished a read aloud, my class broke into applause. They were so moved and felt such a deep connection to the story that they needed to outwardly show their appreciation and enjoyment.
That moment is the perfect snapshot of my students: engaged, motivated to participate, and incredibly deep thinkers.
They are thirsty for knowledge and thrive when challenged, meaning I am always looking for new ways to reach their minds and push them to their full potential.
My Project
My students are currently working with Ms. Anna Vincent, a freshwater ecologist, to learn about microplastics, anthropogenic litter, and water pollution. They have begun designing and building a water pump using LEGOs. They will soon start to brainstorm possible solutions to remove litter from lakes and rivers.
The Chromebooks will allow my students to bring their creative solutions to life through programming.
My students can do more thorough research, much like an actual engineer would need to do, to create a model that could be used to solve this real-life problem. Programming is a skill that is becoming increasingly more important in our world. Giving my students the opportunity to learn the foundations of programming this early in life is giving them an advantage that is incomparable to any amount of money.
This technology will drastically impact my students as they learn to code and program their own creations.
