This school year, 2005-2006, will be the second year of a new course, Creative Writing, in our curriculum. Last year's group created a fantastic compilation of poems, short stories and creative non-fiction. However, my classroom has eight computers and only one printer, a very old HP 710. Our intention for this year is to create a literary magazine that will be available to the entire school and will showcase the best of the best. The HP cannot print anything professional enough for the magazine and it cannot print the quantities we would like. In addition, it is not network-ready, so our print jobs have to be shuttled around on disks. We would like to use Cover Stock for the cover and the addition of a Laser printer would make it possible. While our District can provide computers, the purchase of printers is infrequent and reserved for teachers' computers rather than labs. My students had many poems accepted for publication in a national poetry contest and the pride they showed was fantastic. However, the publication of a magazine that their friends, family, and teachers could see would raise their self-esteem and improve their college applications immensely. Our school is rural and has few opportunities for enrichment. This course will give us a dependable source of student recognition and achievement.
