Creative Writing and Visual Arts by The Sea

My students need basic art and school supplies such as crayons, markers, pencils, folders and paper to show their creativity this school year.

My Students

We are a Title I school near the beach in New York. The community in which my students live is composed of low socio-economic and working class families. However, the families who can afford to send their children to parochial school do, and the rest of the children in the neighborhood attend our public school.

Each student in my class is a unique little character, and when they come together it makes for the perfect story.

My class is an ICT First Grade Class. The class is part Special Education and Part General Education, but one would never know this when they meet the children. They work together and play together on a daily basis. The General Education students and Special Education students work alongside each other to help each other succeed.

The Majority of my students come from the housing projects two blocks from our school. Many of them come from single parent homes or are being raised by other family members. They are low income and have struggled more than most adults have in their lifetime.

My Project

We never want the children to know how much of a struggle it is to get supplies, because children deserve to be children and not be burdened with the financial stresses of the world.

Our students deserve to begin the school year on a level playing field, where they EACH have the same supplies.

My students need new crayons and markers. While there will be lots of writing this year in first grade, we will certainly be incorporating visual arts into many of the activities and lessons this year. Students with disabilities have many goals they are constantly trying to achieve, and the arts always come in last. As a teacher I know that subjects such as science and math can be made more accessible through visual art. I am requesting different kinds of writing paper for my students because I know that my students are all at different stages in their writing. I want to incorporate more creative writing in addition to the traditional styles of writing. I want them to be comfortable with their writing and not discouraged by the standard wide ruled loose leaf paper. They will be able to select the paper they feel most comfortable with from the desk top paper organizer.

One of the most important request I have for this project is the home to school organization folders. These folders are used to communicate with parents, store homework and keep all home to school contact secure. Even when every phone number has failed, these folders usually guarantee that a note sent home will be seen and returned answered!

The remaining supplies such as name tags, bulletin board paper, calendar, table caddies and electric pencil sharpener will be used to maintain an organized and safe classroom.
