Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach four-year-old kindergarten in a large urban public school district in Wisconsin. Currently, our entire school district receives free breakfast and lunch. Our 50-60 (in two classrooms) students attend full-day K4. We have several special needs students who receive services and students who come to school speaking little or no English.
Our school has wonderful parents who participate in their child's educational experiences and value education as an important part of their child's success in the future.
Our classrooms are for regular education and special education children. It is a wonderful, inclusive environment for children!
Because our K4 program is "board-funded" and K4 is not required by Wisconsin law, we receive no additional funds for anything. We are still underfunded and due to COVID-19 we really need more funding!
My Project
My students are learning from home. We are noticing that they need more hands-on writing and drawing because most of what we are doing is online. They need more time to develop their fine motor skills through writing and drawing. Using the finger pad or mouse on the Chromebook is making it hard to learn how to use writing utensils properly.
Do you remember that first story you wanted to tell through pictures and letters?
It is really hard on a Chromebook! Our students had writing journals at the beginning of the year and they are now full. I see the joy in their faces when they are showing me what they drew and the letters they are learning to write!
It would be great to have more writing journals to deliver to their homes!
