Creative Non-Fiction & Exploration of Narrative Writing

My students need copies of "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer to explore the idea of creative non-fiction as well as looking at primary and secondary sources.

My Students

My students are like trail mix. All are diverse in their own way, bringing a unique "flavor" to the classroom all the while providing a pleasing blend of quality that enriches myself and their classroom experience.

I work in an environment where many of the students come from poor backgrounds with little access to literary pieces.

The only exposure many of these kids get to literature is through my class.

Many of these students want higher/post high school educational opportunities, however, without the necessary materials needed to enrich their life skills, they will be deficit in these areas compared to their peers.

My Project

My students need these books in order to see how an author can use primary sources (Chris' personal journal), secondary sources (interviews with people who knew Chris), and visual sources (maps and pictures) to create an interesting narrative. As students read the book, we will explore each specific piece/chapter to determine what type of source was used in addition to exploring the ideas of how logos, ethos, and pathos impacts both writing and reading of the piece.

Once students have finished reading the book, they will conduct an interview with someone they know and create their own narrative writing piece about that person's experience.

Students will use Krakauer's in "Into the Wild" as a framework on how to create a narrative piece of non-fiction writing.
