Creative Kindergarteners Connect Learning Through Play!

Help me give my students creative, hands-on literacy and math materials for kindergarten.

My Students

My students live in a university town and bring diverse experiences to the classroom. They represent 13 languages spoken in the school and the rich cultural background that accompanies that. Kindergarten is a milestone year as students learn the foundations of education not only academically but socially as well.

My students look forward to a place of hope, learning, and belonging as many enter a classroom for the first time.

The students function best in a calm, inviting classroom that is well organized and where they know the routine and expectations. Kindergarten is a hands-on grade where the order of the environment makes room for them all to participate in varied learning experiences.

My Project

Students in my class attend a Title I school in a low-income area. More than 50 percent of students qualify for free or reduced meals. Since district funding is limited, students often go without the creative and engaging learning materials they need. With short attention spans due lack of school exposure and high frustration levels due to missing educational skills, my students need a lot of support academically and emotionally.

These items will help students close the opportunity gap and make academic gains to prepare them for first grade.

My students are enthusiastic learners who enjoy exploring their classroom environment with all 5 senses. Many of them are attending school for the first time in-person and are experiencing a classroom setting for the first time.

The literacy bundles will provide academic support to meet my students' varying reading and writing needs. The math manipulatives and math activity bundles include engaging materials as they learn to count, sequence, and identify numbers. In addition, all materials are easy to clean in order to minimize the spread of illness among students.

I've noticed my students most actively engage in learning activities that involve small motor movements, aiding in the development of their hands and fingers as they begin to write. The sensory bin items, touch and feel letters and stringing beads will meet their sensory and fine-motor development needs so they can strengthen their hands for writing and self-help skills like tying shoes and buttoning their own clothes.
