I teach kindergarten students who are very enthusiastic and inquisitive learners. Their backgrounds are varied, from affluent to poverty level. Some are ESOL students, and some have special needs. Our school is large, with over 900 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Our diverse population makes us special. Our curriculum focuses on student inquiry-based learning with a global perspective. For this age, hands-on learning is essential. They love to play in centers to learn financial literacy through a grocery store, create in an art center, build in a block and game center, listen to stories on a computer, read books in the reading center, and explore in the science center. They learn through play and by doing. Most of our daily instruction is in small groups using many different hands-on materials. Technology plays an important part in our classroom.
My Project
My students love to create beautiful artwork. Their imagination is limited only by the lack of materials. In my classroom I expose the students to a variety of art materials. We use "real" paint brushes, canvases and paint. I am always seeking to fund this very important part of our daily activities.
Throughout the year I introduce a variety of media and their appropriate use so I am requesting a variety of art materials.
As the year progresses, the students select their preferred medium to illustrate. After taking a class on using acrylic paint, I am requesting acrylic paint so I can share these techniques with my students. I am also requesting a canvas for each child to paint. After creating a showpiece, we will display these in our art show and also use the canvas as a gift for the parents. The plastic cups and lids will help us save unused paint. The Crayola oil pastels will enable students to make vibrant pictures. I can't wait to see what my creative students compose.
