My Students

I teach 40 fifth graders from rural Maine, all of whom desire for bigger and greater things for their lives when they get older. Many have experienced hurtful home lives, and school is an opportunity for meal security and physical safety.

Scissors give them the opportunity to reflect, expand, and create.

We partake in a lot of creative projects and lessons to really expand and process our knowledge. We currently have safety scissors that do not fit the students' hands and leave red marks from the rubbing. I would love to give them scissors that fit their hands and that they would like to use while they create.

My Project

We use and need a lot of basic school supplies in our classroom. Scissors, especially, are a major part of our maker education opportunities. As we learn information, question it, and discuss together, we eventually get to creating something to represent our learning. This is where students truly thrive.

They are innovative creators and love to explore and make.

As they create a representation of our learning, it is evident how much fun and focus they are experiencing. Scissors are a large part of making and creating. We currently only have access to scissors that are too small for my 5th graders' hands that they leave red marks due to the rubbing. I'm hoping new scissors will keep them creating and give them more time to focus on their project and not the rubbing.
