Creative Collaboration

Help me give my students new whiteboard tables so that they can better collaborate together.

My Students

We can't do something-YET, is our class motto.

Students are learning that having a growth mindset is the key to success.

Just yesterday I was helping a student who was having trouble doing something on the computer. I told her that we are learning how to do a lot of new things on the laptop that she hasn't done before and that it will get easier with more practice. She replied back to me that she just hasn't learned how to do it-YET!!

The 25 students in my class come from a middle-class neighborhood in a suburb of the capital city.

My Project

Our three classes of 5th graders have been divided into smaller groups for instruction in reading, writing, and math. These success groups allow us to differentiate instruction based on our students' strengths and needs. This year I am responsible for all of the math instruction. My goal as a math teacher is to help the students to be confident, independent thinkers, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and have a positive outlook on math.

These whiteboard tables would allow my students to work together, collaborate, and share ideas, thus creating a classroom where students feel comfortable learning together.

There is a lot of research that discusses the value of talking about math. Talking with their peers emphasizes learning over the product. It makes instruction more engaging and supports a deeper understanding of concepts. Discussing in a small group develops language and social skills in a risk-free environment.
