The group of moderate to severe students that I have in my class this year are very creative and love doing art activities. I would like to promote their interest in crafts by turning it into a learning activity and starting a class business of card making.
The students are mostly 2nd grade, and the process of card making will help the students build their academic skills, along with motor and social skills.
The students will work on counting and number identification in producing and selling the cards. They will build their reading and reasoning skills by following a pattern of how to put the cards together and what the sentiments in the card say. Fine motor skills will be developed by using the die cut machine and turning the handle to cut out the designs, or by stamping designs on the cards. When the cards are completed and the students are selling the cards social skill building will be very important. The class will also have cards premade to send to classmates when they are not at school.
In the last year some people from outside of school have donated to the class scrapbook paper, die cuts, and stamps from Stampin UP, and stickers. The students have enjoyed doing crafts with these materials to the capacity of what I have to offer them in my free hand writing and cutting to make projects. By having a supply of card making supplies and a die cut machine they would be able to utilize the donated materials more.
As a part of the class business, the money that will be made from the cards sold would be used to purchase more supplies and on special days a treat delivered to the school from a restaurant.
