My creative writing students would like to use their passion for words to create a greeting card business that would both utilize their writing skills and strengthen their economic skills. The money would be used to support the class.
We started our creative writing class with very little.
It was an idea I had after experiencing several wonderful creative writing classes in college (both fiction and nonfiction writing). Ever since, I have wanted to facilitate a class like that myself. Together with my students, we have created a place that not only teaches students about writing practices, but also future careers that use strong language skills.
Also, I have always tried to teach my creative writing course in a way that makes students understand that writing is an important element of many fields, especially business and economics.
My Project
I have been looking for a project that would blend writing with economics and business so that students would get a taste of very technical writing, marketing and advertising, and business plan writing.
My dream would be to create a greeting card business within the creative writing classroom that would teach students how to use their skills as writers to create a business plan, use promotional skills to sell the cards, keep up with the inventory, and use the profit to put back into the business as well as by other much needed resources in the classroom.
To a really good job with our business, we need a nice printer, paper cutter, professional grade markers and blank paper. The ideas these students will come up with will be endless!
The classroom business of greeting card production and distribution would make students copy editors, finance managers, graphic designers, distributors, advertising managers, and various other financial and creative positions.
This project will make a difference because students will feel they have created something that is being used and appreciated by many.
It will show them that careers in writing are profitable and reachable when they leave school. A classroom business will also help students to learn the importance of supply and demand; marketing and public relations; and invention and product creation.
