Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Many of my students are amazingly talented people who interact with the world through the creation of music. In music technology, students have an opportunity to work through their struggles, share their joys, and most of all, tell their stories through poetry and song writing. Because our school pulls from a high needs population of students, most of whom are from low-income and impoverished neighborhoods, having this available outlet is very important.

During regular instruction time, our school has a music technology computer lab where students are able to use multimedia software both during class and at lunch on a daily basis.

Unfortunately under the current situation, the distance learning model our district is utilizing distance learning packets, some district-provided PC laptops, and personal electronic devices. None of my current students have at-home access to work with the recording software.

My Project

Picture your favorite famous songwriter sitting down in their bedroom with a pen and a notebook working through their emotions. That is the reality that so many of my kids are facing today. During normal school time, students could transform those words in a notebook to original music to share with the world. The pandemic has made this no longer possible because they currently do not have access to the school recording studio. Now more than ever, they need to be able to share their truth with the world.

These recorders will simply allow my students' homes to be transformed into the recording studios.

When a student is ready to record a song, I can drop them off at their houses and I can connect with them online through distance learning and help them to troubleshoot their work. Once we are back to normal school hours, student will be able to sign these out for evenings, weekends, and for the summer.
