My students need two iPads so they can work on creating their own digital books and headphones so they can listen to read alouds on the computer without distractions.
The students in my class are amazing. They are dedicated and work extra hard to achieve classroom goals. However, some of the students require individualized attention.
Our school is a public school with a learning environment focused on the integration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) designed to help students learn how to solve real-world problems.
We are part of a very large school system but our school is on the smaller side serving around 400 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. All students receive a free breakfast at school and around 75% get a free or reduced-price lunch. The number of AIG students has remained low with less than 15 students identified but continues to grow. Our under-served subgroups include Black, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, and limited English proficient students.
My Project
We spend our day doing hands-on STEM and engineering challenges and center-based learning that excite my students and allow them to work together in teams. Many of these projects and activities involve using an iPad. Those projects are their favorite! We currently only have two iPads for our classroom. Imagine how frustrating it is sharing two iPads between twenty people, especially at age six!
Currently, my students use the iPads to get on reading programs, read online books, create their own books, and learn how to do computer programming.
We could use these iPads in so many more ways by adding a few more to our classroom so that more students can have access to them.
My students could also benefit from headphones for the computers. Currently, when students get on the computer to use a program the volume has to be kept low. My students do their best to hear but without headphones, they struggle to hear books being read to them on the computer. It is also a big distraction to other students in the room, especially those with focusing issues. The use of headphones would be beneficial to students using the computers and those who aren't.
I want the students to have more opportunities to create using iPads so that they are prepared for learning in the 21st century!
