As a teacher in a low income/high poverty school, many of my students do not have the opportunities that so many take for granted. Because of their limited experiences outside of the school environment, I try to provide simple yet meaningful learning experiences while they are in my classroom.
Our school serves a diverse population in grades K-5 in a rural area of the central coast of California.
We have an amazing staff of dedicated teachers and support staff who understand the needs of our students and work diligently to provide engaging learning experiences. We, as a staff, never assume that our students have experienced the same opportunities we have in life. Many of our students do not have the opportunity to go outside of the home setting, other than school, and the rigor of our regular school day does not allow for much in the way of art unless we do a project related to another subject that we can incorporate art into (which we do whenever we can). Our students being low socioeconomically means that our parent-teacher organization has difficulty with participation and raising funds for our students to have those outside experiences or even assemblies.
My Project
A local art studio in a neighboring city provides art education for studetns in surrounding districts. In the Kids Art Smart program, 2nd graders will learn about watercolors, cool and warm colors, and create a watercolor robot. This is all taught by a local artist and then the art created is displayed during an art night at the studio.
Because of our low-income status, we do not have many opportunities to take our students on field trips, especially to learn about art, which they all love to experience.
If funded, this will be the first time our second graders have participated in the Art Smart program.
