Creating Theatre: Transformation Behind the Mask

My Students

My students crave exciting, creative, cutting-edge theatre experiences. I want to provide opportunities that don't seem run of the mill--rather I have a great number of students who are "teetering on the fence" when it comes to the arts, in general, and theatre/drama, specifically. These students are certainly creative but, lack the kind of options and opportunities found in other arts programs around the country.

Quite often my students have never seen live theatre and its life-changing power.

These students are engaged in a number of activities outside the school day that limit their exposure to the magic of theatre. Providing opportunities within the school day is my mandate for live theatre to be life-transforming.

My Project

Theatre is a life-changing experience for many people. I requested a series of masks for performing groups to use to create characters.

Often my students are afraid to try something new and a mask provides that sense of security.

I also chose these masks because the creative impetus is still on the students. What better way to entertain than using this mask as a springboard to basic character creation?

Both the performer and the audience are transformed through performance and what better way to transform than to use the classic mask and all of its magic.
