My Students
Learning to read is one of the magical things that happen in kindergarten. As 5 and 6 year olds, my students come to school eager to learn and excited for the day. For some, kindergarten is their first formal school experience. It is my job to help all of my students learn to read, regardless of where they begin when they come to me in August. I will teach my students to read through guided and shared reading experiences.
This year will be my students' first year at a new school and I want them to feel welcome and ready to learn with everything they need to be successful.
My Project
When learning to read, it is important to give children many different opportunities to engage with text. Reading books aloud is one way to do this, but it is also essential to give students copies of text that they can follow along with and read together with a teacher. A shared reading experience is one of the best ways to build reading confidence in emergent readers.
These Scholastic magazines are a great shared reading resource.
With this subscription, I will get 4 "Let's Find Out" magazines each month, as well as a Science Spin magazine. Each student will get a copy of the magazine to take home after reading in class. These magazines are developmentally appropriate and relevant to my kindergarten students. They can practice decoding skills, sight word identification, and fluent reading. Not only is this a great classroom resource, but the magazines become part of each student's at-home libraries.
The Weather book set corresponds directly with our science unit. There are multiple copies of each book, which means I will be able to use them in small groups to help students engage with content as well as reading strategies.
This project will fund a full year's worth of learning and reading opportunities for my students.
