Creating SEL Clay Masks inspired by Pablo Picasso--Unmasking Our Feelings

Help me give my students a slab roller to make SEL clay masks.

My Project

I would like to create a lesson for my students focusing on their social emotional health by creating clay masks inspired by Pablo Picasso. This lesson would include art history research, a co-taught social emotional lesson, and art making using earth clay, mask molds, and a slab roller. To begin, we would do an art history lesson on Pablo Picasso's emotional states and how his feelings were reflected throughout his artwork, (i.e. his Rose Period, Blue Period, Cubism, etc.) I would then ask our social worker and school psychologist to help me co-teach a SEL lesson on feelings and how to better identify them. Students will choose an emotion they resonate with and/or would like to explore more of, and we would brainstorm different visual ways to express this emotion using clay, mask forms, and a slab roller.

How will the specific items you’re requesting make a difference in their learning?

I already have rolling pins to roll out the clay, however, having a slab roller will make rolling out the clay more efficient and save more time for the art marking aspect of the lesson. It will also make the slabs more evenly rolled out with less room for error and less clay waste overall.

What are your goals ?

My overall goals for this project are for students to better understand their complex emotions and be able to not only identify these emotions, but to also be able to visually express them through the creation of a clay mask.

My students are special because our students have specifically asked for more social emotional support. Student surveys go out to the students at the beginning and end of the year and this was the number one requested piece of feedback students themselves asked the teacher to deliver to them.
