Creating Scantastic Readers!

Help me give my students the freedom to access the stories and academic content their regular education peers can access, so they can feel the pride that comes from being able to do it on their own.

My Project

Weak decoding skills directly impact comprehension of text. The scan pen enables students who struggle with reading disabilities to access grade level text. It also allows the students to focus more on content and develop higher level thinking skills such as interpreting, evaluating, and analyzing information. It also decreases embarrassment and increases confidence. They are portable, come with Bluetooth, and can be used with earbuds so those around them will not be disturbed. Case in point: One student in particular, who has severe learning disabilities and cannot read the words his or hers, was taught to use the pen and is now in mainstream classes using that pen and making some of the top grades in those classes! My middle school students are from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds and they don't always have access to the technology that can help them. These pens have the potential to open new worlds for them. That is my goal. Equity.
