Creating Reading Rock Stars

My Students

Imagine being given a test or assignment,but being unable to understand the words or comprehend the passage. My students face that on a daily basis.

I teach 6, 7 and 8 grade students who are in resource reading class in a Texas public school.

My students look and act like every other student in the school, but can't read like the other students. We utilize the READ 180 program to help remediate these skills individually for each student. Some are working on phonemic skills, others on comprehension, but all are reading at least 3 grade levels below their peers.

My Project

As part of our program with Scholastic, we are provided with books and audio copies of them. My students read along with the cd and book. Hearing and seeing the words helps them to have a model of what good reading sounds like, as well as words they have difficulty with. Also my students have better comprehension when they don't have to focus on decoding the words. They can focus on the meaning, not the words themselves; they are able to discuss and relay information about the story more accurately than when they read it alone.

CD players would allow individuals to read and discuss the books like their friends are doing.

My higher readers would have access to audio and text of novels that they are reading in regular classes. It would give them a chance to be that much more like their peers and to feel like a success. Decoding and comprehension skills would improve, as well as making these kids feel like they are a successful at something!
