Our school is a Title I school with about 80% of our students on free or reduced-price lunch. Our students have a wide range of exceptionalities that include but are not limited to developmental delays, cognitive impairments, language impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), ADHD, ADD, and Down Syndrome.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, but yet they all show a similar love for learning.
Our students walk in the door excited to learn and explore each day. At our age group, we learn through hands-on experiences and play. Play allows our students to use their imaginations, build social skills, and learn to cooperatively engage with others in a child friendly learning environment. Play is important for children of all ages and developmental abilities as it helps them build on their cognitive abilities, fine and gross motor skills, language development, and social emotional needs.
My Project
Reading is an important skill that children learn in school.
Without learning the basic fundamental skills, like rhyming, listening, and focus, students have a hard time learning to read.
Early exposure to stories and reading can help build on our student's reader focus, vocabulary skills, and critical comprehension skills. The earlier we can expose our students to reading the more success they will have with it in the future.
Having a CD player, headphones, and books will give me the opportunity to create a listening/reading center in our classroom. My students will be able to listen to the books on CD and/or look at books of their choice while we are in centers. Giving the students independence when it comes to picking books of their liking will increase their interest and on-task behaviors. Reading is a critical skill for our students to learn. Through reading, the world is at their fingertips.
