Creating Protein Bracelets

My students need pony beads to represent amino acids and lacing to create the protein bracelets.

My Students

DNA transcription and translation is a complicated subject and it is difficult for students to visualize and understand the process of protein building.

My students are thirteen to fifteen-year-olds attending a large public high school in Queens, New York.

They learn in a variety of ways which is why the requested supplies for this activity are so useful. Making DNA bracelets especially appeals to kinesthetic learners who learn best by physically doing something and visual learners who best remember what they see.

My Project

Students will work in groups to produce proteins. Each student will act in one of three roles. The first is mRNA, which reads the amino-acid pattern (DNA) in the "nucleus" in our classroom (really a back closet). The mRNA student then travels back to their desk to give the instructions to the rRNA/ribosome student. The rRNA/ribosome tells the tRNA student retrieve beads of various colors, one at a time, and then assembles the "protein" bracelet. Each protein bracelet has a theme such as health (which uses amino acids found in antibodies which help our body fight disease) or strength (which uses amino acids found in actin, a protein that helps muscles contract).

With the requested pony beads, my students will be able to visually conceptualize the complicated processes of protein transcription and translation.

They will end this activity with their very own protein bracelet. For extra credit most students will choose to write a short description of the activity and give the bracelet to a friend or loved one who can use it in their daily life. For instance, they may give the 'health' bracelet to a family member who is currently having health issues.
