With nearly 90 high school students working in teams, the library transformed into a creative studio where students designed and prototyped games addressing this year's theme: Outgrow Hunger. Students explored how ecosystems, food systems, and community choices connect to real-world challenges.\r\n\r\nMany donors are familiar with technology at home, but in our classroom the focus is not just using technology, it's creating with it. Students used laptops and digital tools to brainstorm ideas, prototype mechanics, design artwork, and test gameplay. Instead of simply playing games, they were learning how games are built: how mechanics teach ideas, how player choices affect outcomes, and how design can communicate complex topics like food insecurity.\r\n\r\nWhat excited students the most was the chance to turn their ideas into playable prototypes in just one day. Teams experimented with tabletop games, digital games, and interactive storytelling. They tested their ideas during a Gallery Walk where peers and industry mentors played their games and provided feedback. Seeing adults from the tech and game design industry engaging with their work made the experience especially meaningful.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who are usually quiet in traditional classroom settings truly shined during the event. Some took leadership roles guiding their teams through design decisions, while others who enjoy art and storytelling contributed by creating characters, worlds, and visual assets. The collaborative nature of the Game Jam allowed different strengths: coding, design, writing, and strategy, to all play an important role.\r\n\r\nYour support did more than fund supplies and snacks, it helped create a space where students could think creatively, collaborate with peers, and see themselves as designers, problem-solvers, and future technologists.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience possible for our students.","fullyFundedDate":1768421566083,"projectUrl":"project/cs-week-hackathon-code-compete-create/9909854/","projectTitle":"CS Week Hackathon: Code, Compete, Create!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ramirez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10357516_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y626&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768420606294","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-ramirez-luna"},{"teacherId":9872265,"projectId":9905953,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your contribution to our project. With the implementation of the NYS Phone ban that went into effect in September, many of my students were at a loss for how to conduct their interviews during school time; until now, they had relied so heavily on their individual devices. After conferring with my senior class, it was determined that, at minimum, they would need recorders, mics, and headphones in order to do their jobs well while at school. Students used the recorders to capture interviews with subjects around the school building, especially in places like the student cafeteria and ground floor where the wifi is extremely unreliable and requires an old-school approach. \r\nStudents were super excited to use the recorders; it made them feel more official and professional while conducting interviews. I feel that that confidence is essential when students are beginning their journey as student journalists because for many of them, conducting these interviews and speaking with strangers is intimidating. The recorders were a small step in that direction for my classes.\r\nStudents have had a lot of practice with the recorders as we start working on article four for this school year. They have captured interviews, transcribed their interviews from the playback utilizing the headphones, and have included quotes in their articles. I think it is so cool when I hear a student say, \"hold up, I have to check that,\" and they go to the audio playback. \r\nThis support has been a blessing this school year and we thank you, sincerely, for your contribution to our project.","fullyFundedDate":1764120103311,"projectUrl":"project/the-light-journalism-class-needs-a-tech/9905953/","projectTitle":"The Light Journalism Class Needs a Tech Boost","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fitzgerald","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9872265_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x0,y103&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734018886868","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9872265"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1134","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2118,"numTeachers":110,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":48,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":4,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.7,"schoolId":1134,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Thomas Edison Career & Technical High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Thomas Edison Career & Technical High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/thomas-a-edison-vocational-high-school/1134"}
