My Students

Curious, inquisitive, hardworking, just a few of the qualities I admire about my students. Creating a learning environment condusive to developing students' social and emotional growth, especially during such a critical transition period from elementary to middle school, is extremely important.

Teaching children in the 21st century has shifted our role from being the 'instructor' to facilitating students to construct their own learning. My school system's initiative of "Strong in Every Way" has set a "goal of building connected, resilient, self and culturally adept young people during their formative years"*; one way I support this initiative is to hold classroom meetings constructed with various themes to create open dialogue and an inclusive learning environment for all my students. Working with my colleagues, we have developed a list of themes, a few of which are compassion, determination, integrity, self-awareness, and empathy; pairing each theme with children's picture books to enhance our classroom meetings.

My Project

The children's literature chosen for this project will help develop connections through text and images for 21 different classroom meeting themes. These themes are tied to our school system's success traits: compassion, wellness, ethics, determination, and confidence, as well as various themes connecting to social and emotional learning.

The literature chosen in the project not only connects to social and emotional learning, but also to themes found within the Math and Science curriculum I teach throughout the year.

My goal is to teach to the whole child, helping them stay organized, become independent and find their voice. I find teaching cross-curricular lessons helps my students make connections while developing resilience.
