Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Inspire middle school art students to CREATE a masterpiece with a hands-on building and engineering skills. The goal is to encourage students who may not feel successful with more traditional art mediums to participate with others to create and appreciate artwork. This kit will be kept in the art room where all art students may work on it during times when they have completed work or need to take a break from a challenging activity. Among the classes that I teach, there are many students with various disabilities including two separate setting classes that come to art weekly.
Students can be successful by working together to complete the artwork of making a replica of a well known artistic masterpieces by Leonardo Da Vinci & Vincent Van Gogh.
They can practice fine motor skills and follow along with building instructions. They will then add LED lights and a controller to engineer an interactive image using 21st Century skills. Students will be exposed to concepts of building and technology.
The students at my Title 1 school are mostly minorities with many at poverty level. The school is majority hispanic and I have many who are English language learners. Following instructions and communicating over an activity such as this will be a great way to build their language skills, as well as create a feeling of acceptance among all students. The connection between students as they work together will also build social emotional skills as they compromise. The completed build will be kept on display in the art room for unification of all students.
