Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title I school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm. Many of the students' families come from other countries. Their home language is often something other than English. I have a responsibility to guide my students through the year providing them with new and diverse experiences to make them lifelong learners.
I teach in a Humanities/ Leadership Magnet.
As this is the second year of the program, Humanitarianism and Leadership skills are developed and emphasized throughout the year.
My Project
How will the Chromebooks be used? As Leaders, my students are responsible for organizing various activities for the student body. With photographs taken by members of the Student Council, a yearbook committee will create the yearbook. These computers will be dedicated for this use only. They will be at the disposal for the students to work on continuously. It will make a difference since the students will have all of their photos and descriptions of activities all in one place.
Creating the yearbook gives the students a sense of leadership and pride.
The students take ownership of the project and are responsible to keep up with the creation of the book. They learn that there are deadlines for each part of the project. The students will be working like journalists.
